I can’t remember who it was but someone contacted me and told me I need to check out Revolution Pizza many months ago. I filed that tip away in the dark and scary recesses of my brain and when the opportunity arose I retrieved that little tidbit and suggested to a friend of mine that we should check it out since we were both up for a little adventure. Sad that I consider a new restaurant an adventure BUT let the ADVENTURE BEGIN!

This is the old location of the Mellow Mushroom in NoDa. It’s a HUGE restaurant that you can almost get lost in. Only recently had they begun serving lunch so it was blind luck that we happened upon them when they were actually open. A week earlier and I would’ve missed out. It was really slow, probably due to not typically being open for lunch. The hostess decided to seat as as far of a walk as possible from the front door as she could for some reason. I thought I had put on deodorant that day but maybe not. It was a nice spot though, in a booth next to the window so we could watch all the pierced and tattooed people walking past.

The menu isn’t massive but is reasonable for a pizza joint. It’s designed to force you to build your own pizza which I honestly didn’t appreciate. The Counter does this with their burgers but they give you a couple of cheater options to relieve you of the pressure of having to come up with your own design if the stress gets too overwhelming. I was able to do a few calculations and after much deliberation concocted a tasty yet sufficiently unhealthy pizza. My friend caved under the pressure and tried to go with a White Pizza. One of the two bases that you start out with is similar to a White pizza but not really. He stuck with the base, even after the waitress encouraged him to add something . . . anything! Stubborn to the end he stuck it out and was unhappy. Oh well. Fortunately we’d already ordered Bruschetta which helped things a bit. It was incredibly good stuff. My pizza came out and looked killer. Coincidentally it was killer! Probably could have been better if I had been a little more ingenious with my topping design but it was quite tasty. The dough is made in-house and the toppings are sourced locally which makes for a really fresh and flavorful pizza.

I still really like a lot of other pizza places around town but Revolution holds it’s own very well. Gimme a couple cheater-prebuilt options and I’m good to go. Once I get comfortable I’ll start get’n all mad-scientist with my pizzas. I did pretty good under pressure this time.

I’m glad something quality landed in the old Mellow Mushroom location. Mellow had something going on but I think Revolution outshines the original tenants by a considerable amount.Revolution Pizza on UrbanspoonBookmark and Share
