Dish
Dish is a funky little place off Thomas Avenue in the Plaza Midwood area, nestled amongst lots of other great places to grab some grub. Good news for everyone is that more killer spots seem to be springing up around here all the time. Dish has been around for a good little while now and is pretty well established as one of the dining anchors in this interesting part of town.
The old concrete building that’s painted yellow doesn’t give the impression there’s anything special lurking within but you’ll find a decently diverse menu of home cook’n options. I’m a fan of the Grilled Fish Sandwich although it looks more pan fried than grilled. If you’re in need of a tasty tranquilizer I’d suggest the Cajun Meat Loaf and Mashed Potatoes. You’ve got about 20 minutes to get where you’re going after you finish eating it though or you’ll be found face down on the curb outside in a puddle of drool. There are loads of other gems on the menu like the quesadilla or grilled cheese that are less coma-inducing. No matter what you pick you’ll find it’s all good stuff.
The atmosphere of the lower seating area kinda feels like grandma’s basement and the upper seating area is more like the bedroom attached to grandma’s basement that your uncle never moved out of. The outdoor seating area has a decidedly upscale trailer park feel and is quite nice for some casual chill’n. Like most of the other restaurants in this neck of the woods, the staff is required to have at least 3 tatoos and lots of personality. Service is usually snappy and friendly. Food comes out quick and hot, and drinks never run dry.
Is the food out of this world? No, but it is a solid destination with good, reasonably priced food, solid service and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s definitely a place that deserves a regular spot in the rotation. Especially since it’s not a one-trick-pony and has several entree’s that I can opt for that are all pretty chomp-worthy.
