Lupie’s Cafe

View from register toward front door. Non-smoking area. Yes, that’s a flamingo in the upper right corner.
Lupie’s is a long-lived Charlotte restaurant that serves up home cook’n style meals with daily specials that are the same week-to-week.
My personal menu favorite is anything with Texas Chili. This is a mostly ground beef chili with little else cluttering it up. It’s fairly spicy however it’s heat has been tempered from absolutely scalding to warm over the last couple of years. I miss the burning in my stomach I would get late in the afternoon after a noon-time rendezvous but it’s still quite tasty and much more tolerable for the average Joe or Josephine. There is also the option of Cincinnati or Veggie chili for those that are down with the spicy stuff. Cincinnati is a little odd to my taste buds since it contains cinnamon I believe and I’ve never opted for the veggie so I’ll refrain from passing judgment.
Other highlights include the massive burgers, chicken and pastry which is the Thursday special, chili mac which as the name implies is simply spaghetti covered in your choice of chili, ginormous portions of banana pudding, and the grand master . . . drum roll pu-lease! Throw Down Nacho’s. You can get’em in one layer or two layer. One layer is enough for two normal people or one very hungry hombre. Two layer is obscene and shouldn’t be ordered in the presence of small children.
Service is usually quite good and today was no exception. Sweet Tea refilled promptly and usually before I realized I was about to run dry. Food comes out quick. Sometimes it can take a little time to get seated but lately it’s been slower I believe due to some of the other competition coming on to the scene.
